Tips & Tricks #4 “Burning Man Costumes”

This is about the time of year that people start asking “Where can I buy Burning Man Costumes?”

This video breaks down a bunch of reason why that is the wrong question to be asking. First, call them “outfits” not costumes. Then, make sure they don’t MOOP, you can play in them, and they don’t chafe you.

Have any outfit tips of your own to share?

I love the way you express this. Outfits and a measure of expressing your true self that may need some support and exposure.
    Hugs – and <3 s – and happiness.

Halcyon rocks! The other tip I’d add, especially for Birgins, is ‘don’t fucking sweat it’. You will no doubt have image seached BM and seen dozens of super cool people looking super cool, and then started to fret whether you’ll be able to look that cool too. You might or you might not, some folk just have more ‘cool’ than others. Abide by the ‘no chaf’ rule, live the ten principals and have a blast. If you look cool doing it, great, if not well you’ll be comforted to know that no one at BM really gives a shit. And besides, you’ll probably end up dancing naked in the desert some morning at 4am. Lets just say its a leveller :). Love to all.

While I love the expressiveness of everyone’s outfits, its also important to note the functional items that are necessary. Scarves (for the dust), a good sun hat, and a warm jacket. A lot of people go with fur, but you can wear a cool 80’s ski jacket, or wear thermal layers. It gets cold at night!

Love it Halcyon! My recommendation for all Birgins is binge-watch Halcyon’s vids. They gave me such a foundation back in the day at my first Burn. I’ll add this tip, only recently discovered: If you’re aiming to crash in Reno or nearby the day or two before the Burn, check out Burning Man classifieds on FB or local Reno papers. So many Burners and ex-Burners throw the dopest garage sales leading up to the Burn. I stopped by one last year and literally had 10 new outfits and a couch in an hour for a very well-negotiated price and a hug. Plus, my money went to a fellow Burner. Support the community pre- and post-Burn. And always, if you can, bring extra outfits to the Playa. You may change your mind, it may get cold or hot, you may ruin something, or you can always gift some sweet swag to your neighbors!
