What’s New With Burning Man? An Update From Marian

We don’t know what the next year has up its sleeve, but we do know you are all what keeps Burning Man alive. Our CEO Marian just shared an important update about what’s new with Burning Man Project and Black Rock City. Check out the full video here, and read on for highlights! This is not a GO/NO-GO announcement. We will share an update every Saturday until we make that decision, which we anticipate doing by the end of April.

Where Are We With Black Rock City?

While it’s still too soon to know if we’ll be together on the playa this year, some mitigations currently being talked through are: proof of vaccination, shifting on-the-ground operations (particularly for Gate, DPW, Rangers, and medical teams), handling emergencies, and more. But the go/no-go decision goes beyond the medical and practical factors. “Safe enough to move forward” is not the only consideration at play. Is this summer the right time to build Black Rock City together? What are the cultural and social implications of BRC happening this year? Just because we technically might be able to do the event, it doesn’t mean we necessarily should, or will. You will be kept in the loop over the next few weeks as we gain more clarity. Our intention is to make a go/no-go decision by April 23, or at the latest April 30. Thank you to our COVID-19 Task Force for helping us weigh the pandemic variables.

2021 Honoraria Art Funding

Our nonprofit survived last year because of our community’s generosity: over 21,000 people gave between $10 and $5,000,000 to help keep the lights on and the fire burning. A group of generous donors recently raised funds specifically to support Burning Man art and artists. As a result, we are pleased to announce we’ll be funding this year’s Honoraria art projects, no matter what happens with Black Rock City. Close to $1 million will be granted to 58 art projects in 14 U.S. states (NY, NC, GA, LA, IL, TX, CO, NM, UT, NV, AZ, OR, CA, WA), and eight other countries: Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Spain, and Ukraine. The art of Burning Man is global, year-round, and deeply impactful, and it extends well beyond the trash fence on playa. We can’t wait to see how these artists bring their visions to life. If the artists are not able to bring their art to the playa in 2021 or 2022 they will not be penalized or asked to return the grant funds. The art needs to be built and we hope it will be in BRC, but if not, it will be out in the world where Burning Man art should also be! Thank you generous donors.

Art Speaks

The online artist storytelling series ArtSpeaks emerged from the digital dust in the spring of 2020. So far, 10 episodes have highlighted stories from 49 different Burning Man artists. ArtSpeaks will be back in the fall for Season 2, but for now you can binge-watch all of Season 1.

Sustainability & LAGI 2020 Fly Ranch

LAGI Prototyping a Sustainable Future

In July 2019, we announced the 2030 Environmental Sustainability Roadmap, and we’ve been plotting how to reach this ambitious goal. The LAGI 2020 Design Challenge partnered with Fly Ranch, the undeveloped 3,800-acre property near Black Rock City — a canvas for sustainability, learning and innovation. We are now down to 10 design finalists who will soon begin bringing their ideas to life. We can’t tackle Burning Man’s sustainable future alone: we hope YOU will get involved. Please join us on April 19 for a call on these topics to learn more about the LAGI Design Challenge. Want to visit Fly Ranch? Donation-based nature walks are open to the public.

Burning Man Hive Labs

Earlier this year, you told us you wanted to do more around sustainability; radical inclusion, diversity and equity (R.I.D.E.); health and safety; and participation. You said you wanted to learn, to have conversations, and to build things with others in the community. Those learnings brought us to this moment. Next week we will begin welcoming the first participants into Burning Man Hive Labs, a facilitated process on Burning Man Hive for Burners to connect, learn and collaborate around shared goals for evolving Black Rock City and Burning Man culture. Want to get on board? Let us know here!

The Virtual Burn

Helios by Kate Raudenbusch in BRCvr 2020

Over 165,000 people participated in the virtual Multiverse during Burn Week in 2020. In 2021, we’re again working with talented creators and technologists in our community to build the Virtual Burn: bigger, more interactive, and radically inclusive. Anyone with an internet connection, from anywhere in the world, will be able to participate. You can get involved and contribute as an artist, developer or volunteer — we want your help to bring virtual Burning Man to life!

Radical Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (R.I.D.E.)

Helios by Kate Raudenbusch in BRCvr 2020

We are working to make all Burning Man spaces (including Black Rock City) more accessible, inclusive, and diverse. Our next big milestone is the multi-year R.I.D.E. Roadmap, to be published soon, which outlines a lot of the exciting work and objectives we have for the next 10 years. Over 500 people attended the first Radical Inclusion + Diversity Town Hall last October. A second virtual town hall is scheduled for April 24 — we hope you can join us!

Announcing an Invitation to the Future!

The Mega Cake by Piece of Cake Productions, Photo by Juan P. Zapata

Many of you have shared that you would like to show your support for Burning Man’s future by securing access to future tickets. We are excited to announce (drumroll!) a new “Invitation to the Future.”

Those who have the financial means can buy a reservation that guarantees access to purchase one regular-priced ticket to the next two Black Rock City events.

In other words, purchasing this reservation ensures you have an opportunity to get a ticket the next two times we can gather on the playa. There are 1000 of these opportunities for $2500 each. We expect these to go quickly. Visit your Burner Profile if you’re ready to go for it. For more detailed information, check out this post or visit tickets.burningman.org.

We Hope to See You Soon

Be sure to tune into the next two upcoming events for deeper dives into the ongoing important work of Burning Man Project and in our community: learn about LAGI and sustainability on April 19, and the second R.I.D.E. virtual town hall on April 24. For Black Rock City updates and information, subscribe to the Burning Man Journal and the Jackrabbit Speaks, and keep an eye on our social channels.

Thank you for being here, and for embodying the spirit of Burning Man during this incredible time. We’ll be seeing you in the virtual (or actual) dust soon!

100% Agree. I’m not vaccinated and will not be getting vaccinated. What happened to radical inclusion? Also, the vaccinations only last a few months and they don’t protect against all variants so is there an expectation that everyone will be vaccinated multiple times within months of the event including booster shots? So disappointed as I was under the impression BM was more diverse and open minded.

Could do Daily rapid test for those who can’t or won’t get vaccinated. I imagine at an event this size they are going to be mandated to have one in medical. They just pay in advance for #of tests for those who have serious and publicly stated objections to immunizations.

people who had covid 19 virus can get it again. That is why it is so dangerous. The vaccines don’t mean you can’t get it. It just helps protect you.

I agree with you completely. I get that they are trying to keep people as safe as possible, but are mandatory vaccines really the way to go?
It’s less likely, but it is still possible for vaccinated people to catch and spread Covid. Couldn’t there be different requirements for people who aren’t vaccinated? (i.e. PCR test, Antibody test, or even daily Antigen tests)
I got COVID recently and have anybodies. I also would have no problem bringing proof of a negative PCR test, and/or paying for rapid testing and antibody testing on-site.
There are many legitimate reasons people may choose to not get vaccinated. I was diagnosed with Guillén-Barre shortly after receiving my first flu vaccine. I was paralyzed for over two weeks and had to be hospitalized to put me on fluids. The Dr said I could be paralyzed for up to two years! There are only one in roughly a million people who get GBS through vaccination.
I know the risk is low that each individual has a very love chance of developing bad side effects getting the COVID vaccine..: but then again, I have been that one in a million case before, and I don’t think I should be pressured by society to trust blindly in the safety of these vaccines especially since GBS can reoccur throughout a person’s life.
I know people say I should just stay home if I won’t get vaccinated, but I hope you know that the burn means as much to me as I’m sure it does to all of you, and it would be crushing to be ousted from attending when Id be more than willing to show proof of a PCR test and take antibody or rapid tests on site.

My vaccine status along with all of my medical information is private and luckily our laws still prevent discrimination based on medical status.

I will not reveal my vaccination status, and if prevented from entering based on that will sue. I hope most do the same. Those rights were hard fought, mostly over HIV back in the 90s, and we shouldn’t give them up so easily.

It’s a private event. If you don’t want to show proof, you don’t have to enter. That is YOUR decision. Same with an ID at a bar. Or vaccinations you had to take to go to elementary school/highschool.

      • South Dakota Burner says:

I think you misunderstand the law, the protections in place very much hold true for private events. They must provide reasonable accommodations for people unable to receive the vaccine for medical or religious reasons. Their permit to hold it on public land does not grant them the ability to discriminate.

Besides the legality, it is just plain wrong.

When did this place because so full of hate? Stay home from burning man, you’re not welcome!? Listen to yourselves? Your comments and comparison are what cause the horrible discrimination against not only HIV, but gay people as well. FACTS:

It is completely legal for states to require vaccinations. The states did it all the time prior to the pandemic when they require vaccination cards for kids to attend school and will continue after the pandemic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobson_v._Massachusetts

Also, the vaccines last longer than 3 months. Currently we have had the vaccine for 6 months or so (for some ppl). Right now all the science can say is that it will last at least 6 months because no one has had it longer to see if it does work. The expectation is that it will last at least a year if not two and we might need yearly shots just like we already do for the flu. Also, all the vaccines work against all the variants. There is a reduced efficacy, but the effectiveness is still above what is needed for protection. For example the vaccines are 67% less effective against the Brazil variant. However, the efficacy is still above what is needed for protection even with that reduced effectiveness.

There is no hate or some kind of government conspiracy intended when requiring vaccines. The frustration comes from ppl stating their opinions as facts. In the case of a pandemic, this can lead to actual physical harm because ppl are turned away from getting a vaccine, which the science so far overwhelmingly supports that it’s safe and effective.

The science supports vaccines and we should require vaccination confirmation to enter the event for the safety of the participants AND the safety of the communities surrounding the event. Not getting a vaccine is certainly an individual’s choice. However, there is no right, nor should there be a right, to be able to attend an event if an individual’s decision puts the greater public at risk.

Vaccination reduces the risk of transmitting the virus not completly but by 80% to 97% depending on the drug. That is the main point for me. It is not about keeping me safe, but others. That is why guns and lasers are not allowed.
Of course their are good and coutious people with guns and lasers. But on an event of this scale, you know that some injuires and even death will happen.
Same with the virus: Of cause we cannot avoid having it on playa, but we (with some effort and common sence) dramatically reduce the spread within BRC but, even more impoartant, all over the places we burners will return to after we had fun out there.
For me that is core the BM ethos: leave no trace, civic responsibility, have fun, but dont harm others along the way. For me that takes priority.
All people are welcome. But behavior that intentionally or at least willingly puts others at severe risk is not.

The organization needs money and while understandably not everyone can afford to donate or buy tickets in advance, they need a cash flow. Reserving 1000 tickets out of 70 or 80k for those who can spare 2500 dollars seems like a good way to ensure funding for another year. That’s 2.5 million dollars.

This is 1000 tickets out of 80k tickets if we go by latest populations. Yes, the wealthy have access to those, but they are then paying 3000 dollars to go next year, 3500 if they want to go 2 years. It can allow the BM to happen so the rest of us can go.

It’s unfortunate they even have to fundraise, but honestly it’s a great idea for those who can afford to pay it. In essence, those rich people would have to pay either 3000 for 1 year or 3500 for 2 years. It funds the organization now.

This isn’t a change that caters to the wealthy – if anything, it caters to wealth less than the FOMO sale it replaced. There are fewer slots available, and each “invitation” only gets you one ticket per year.

It also eliminates the ability for the well-heeled to use the FOMO sale as insurance – buying two tickets just in case they don’t get tickets in the main sale, then reselling the FOMO tickets (at FOMO prices) if they happen to succeed.

Do I really want to go this year given these restrictions? YES, these are logical requirements.

Is it worth the risk given the new variants and non-compliance of some? TBD

Will the BRC experience be as renewing as it has been the past twelve years I have attended? TBD

Wow,really “the right thing ” ??? Who’s right thing ? The need of the many – including folks on the playa as well as all the folks a long the way from where every one will be traveling to and from before and after the event must be of higher concern then people who refuse to get vaccinated for what ever reason they feel, far out weights not getting vaccinated and or ensuring the event can be held safely. In the words of Spock – the need of the many outweigh the need(sic) of the few. Also,an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure … Simply put, Burning Man is suppose to be about caring about others, not just a party on the playa. The whole money thing should not really be of concerns,it’s the 570,000+ folks who have died because if these horrible virus and that’s on top of the other causes of folks dying each day from other causes. What kind of an enjoyment could folks have with the fear/thought of people having medical issues related to the virus without trying to hopefully mitigate it by simply requiring vaccination. That goes for helping ensuring they do not spread it to folks along the way too. Medical resources are extremely limited and over stressed during a normal burning man, just image what it would be with this. I am a 17 year burner now and it’s disheartening to read and see just how selfish some people can be. Obviously, you can tell a real burner – caring person from others just be reading these comments. It’s sad and unfortunately, but it is where burning man has been heading over the past years with the people who go just for a selfish party. In closing, just because it may be permitted to have, does not mean we should and need to have it in person this year. In fact, all the hateful comments coupled with the talk of refusing to get vaccinated, provide verification and ” falsifying verification cards” … Shouts to Burning Man NOT to proceed with an in person event for the need of many, not just haters. I think burning man should explore the opportunity of fund raising – last year, the DGS tickets cost individuals 2.7 sale fee a long with others for roughly $150.00 per two tickets, I know I would rather simply give that up front to burning man, instead of a company who makes the money and gives nothing back (?) . We are burners and we day we care about things and people, but our actions speak louder then words. I hope everyone says safe and my thoughts and prayers are for everyone in the world who has lost lover ones from the virus and any other way.

Bravo on your comments Tony! People are allowed to not to chose the vaccine of course – but because that means they can spread a dangerous and deadly virus, they should not be allowed in to big events right now.

Just like the unvaccinated most likely won’t get to travel many places internationally, go to certain venues, take a cruise, work places where they could infect vulnerable people, or go to school on many campuses,

But also, for the love of God, think of all those who have suffered or been lost. Imagine 10 years of people that go Burning Man all dead in one year. That’s Covid-19.

So if you don’t want to get a vaccine, by all means don’t – but you don’t have the right to bring harm to others. I am deeply grateful to have gotten the shots – most of all because I am helping to keep others safe.

If it seems personal to me,well it is – I am one of the many many who had love ones die. People who had to go to work to support thier families, cared about others and got the virus doing so. It was people who thought they had rights to go out and party and act like there was no pandemic going on that helped spread the virus and deaths. So,it’s not discrimination,it called putting the safety and well being above selfish individual who only care about partying.

You assume the vaccines will protect people from getting or spreading the virus. It doesn’t. CDC/Pfizer/Moderna/AstraZeneca don’t know after two months if their vaccines are still effective. The data from the trials spell this out. The breakthrough cases happening prove vaccinations don’t guarantee health or safety of anyone. It only reduces severity of symptoms – that is what they are labelling as 95% efficacy for. The State is the state, so if Nevada requires it, that is their requirement. If vaccines are necessary to participate, Burningman must remove “Radical Inclusion” as one of the fundamental principles of the event because it would clearly no longer be true.

Look at what happened in KY when an unvaccinated health care worker in a Care Facility have the virus to 23+ people who were fully vaccinated – one of them died as the results of that person’s careless actions. Just imaged how bad it would be if they were not vaccinated. The great good is far far better then the risks. The playa is a dirty nasty breeding grounds for things already, why why would anyone want to go there without taken as many safey precautions as possible. If you won’t get vaccinated, your choice. But stay home. You are not free to kill others because you choose not to get a vaccine. And don’t ask Burning Man to fund all the extra medical needed to get you off the playa when you catch Covid due to your own recklessness. However, there are things we as humans can do to help reduce the seriousness and impact on things. I have talked with other camps and my own camp mates ( from many States and three other countries) and our desire to be on the playa for 2021 includes and will only be with safety guidelines (daily testing is not a sure thing – false positive or negatives) and is resource intense – costly, what do you do with positive tests – Lot D them ??? , What about staffing resources ? The number of attendees to the event will already be reduced, so do those numbers include all the extra folks for that ? What about law enforcement needs – it is obvious the number will have to be ramped up to meet the needs ( we do want a Jan 6 incident) and what about Medical ??? I am sure there are a lot of others they will want to be instead of being in a night mare of a setting on the playa ( I have spoke with an ER Doctor and RN ) 18+ year burners and neither want to go. Hello to all, hope everyone is staying safe and healthy – I am not sure if folks have seen the News in Kentucky ??? Where an unvaccinated health care worker in a Care Facility infected 22 -( may 26+ ) residents who were fully vaccinated – and unfortunately one of them died as the results. The others appear to be stable and doing already with no serious threat of getting sicker or dying due to the infection. The vaccine is doing it’s job in protecting folks, especially our most critical and vuerable population. However, like it is clearly stated,no vaccine is 100 percent. But,if the health care worker was vaccinated according, then this would be à mute point. Also, vaccinated people can and do carry the virus, can spread it,but it’s not as strong and we all have a better chance of surviving any exposure to the virus as we all work together as a family, friends, fellow burners and community to end this horrible virus. It is not right to even consider anything other then requiring full vaccination to attend burning man in person. Most schools are mandating vaccination in order to attend schools next year for staff and students alike. The virus is attacking are youth now and the impact is bad … Not just minor symptoms. We have a lot of very valuable older burners who help make burning man what it is and without them it not burning man,it would simply just be another party on the playa and that’s not what Burning Man is about. As a picture in time, not everyone who wants to go to burning man gets together way. So, the folks who do not want or cannot (sic) get vaccinated, they need to stay home this year. It’s that simple – the need need of the many, outweigh the need (sic) wants of the few and you are the few. Is it just me, or am I missing something? Reading through these posts and wrapping my head around the science and rights aspects it seems clear that the org has to conform to the states guidelines or to uphold “radical inclusion”and not have the event. Is it the “rights” stance that it is better not to have the event and deprive those of us the experience, then bow out a year or two because they choose not to vaccinate? It seems to me that it is out of the orgs hands. I agree its a slippery slope, but this isn’t as simple as a condition or disease that is manageable. Last I checked I could hug a person with HIV and not contract it, or huddle in a tent through a dust storm and not get herpes. You can get covid by using a porta potty or just breathing so this is clearly different. I would have chosen not to vaccinate, but I wish to see my friends and home again, so its appears to be my choice. I think blaming the org for upholding the states guidelines is misguided, and its probably been some serious round table discussions about do or not do the event for a second time. I have read these comments through. Wow. There is so much misinformation and very emotional responses. I’m rather surprised to see so much vitriol from fellow Burners.

This is about two things; Civic Responsibility and personal choice. You can have both. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, that is your choice. If you are not vaccinated, skip the event this year (civic responsibility). I see people commenting that they will take the risk; my body, my choice, and whatever rights they think are being violated. Nobody is violating your right to not get vaccinated. Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Nobody is forcing you to buy a ticket and attend the event.

What “agenda” are you talking about? The agenda to protect the vulnerable in our communities and engage in minimal precautions in order to assist with minimizing the devastating effects of a global pandemic? That agenda? How horrible! How dare we care about others and not just ourselves.

I don’t know where this idea that Burning Man is about doing whatever you want to do with no regard for anyone else. THAT is not the Burner way. I have been attending consistently since 2000 and responsibility for more than just yourself has long been a principle. There is no violation of your right to privacy. Nobody is forcing you to give this information publicly. You don’t have to give it at all, but that may mean you won’t be admitted to Burning Man. You have a choice. It isn’t a mandatory event.

To those with real medical conditions, I feel for you and you need to be extra cautious. If you are so medically fragile you can’t get the vaccine or wear a mask, you probably don’t belong in the middle of a desert in hostile conditions with only minimal medical assistance available. You might want to consider that.

As someone here suggested, it may be that we need an annual booster, like with the flu vaccine. Ok. Yes, I’ll do that just like I do with the flu vaccine to protect the elderly and vulnerable I come into contact with through my public service employment.

Might it turn out to be true that in the end we were overly cautious for no reason? Sure! But I’d rather be cautious now than irresponsible given what we know today. And please don’t tell us about a friend you know with a devastating response to the vaccine. Please! The numbers dying from COVID far outweigh the numbers dying or having a negative reaction from the vaccine, as tragic as that is. I do not want to minimize your experience, but If you tell your story about your friend then I have to tell you my stories about the devastation to families and communities from COVID for those who were not lucky enough to get vaccinated and all the people I personally know who have had the vaccine with no negative response, including myself. Let’s please not engage in the invisible army debate.

If you choose not to vaccinate and not to attend, we will miss you. It will not be the same experience without you, but it will still be an experience.

For those of us old enough to have been vaccinated so you can live in a world without polio, you’re welcome.

I am against having proof of a shot to attend Burning Man.

I understand there are some fellow burners who feel that this could cause a super spreader event. The evidence does not support that opinion. Texas is the second most populated state in America. Texas has three out of ten of the most populated cities in America. Texas has been completely open, no masks or shot requirements for more than a month now, and has the LOWEST number of cases per 100,000 in all 50 states. Texas is number 50 and Michigan, the most locked down state, is number 1 with the highest number of cases per 100,000.

I am not claiming to know why. A lot of Texans have received the shot and a lot of Texans have not. There is the suggestion and possibility that heat, sun, and wind have a destructive effect on the virus. Texas has a lot of heat, sun, and wind. So does Black Rock City.

The Org. may be violating the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by discriminating against employees based on their medical condition by requiring a shot to attend.

Violating federal law would invalidate a loan condition of their $2 – $5 million PPP loan and require the Org. to repay the loan instead of having it forgiven.

A lot of attendees (volunteer) work a lot of hours in order to receive benefits from Burning Man. They work a lot of hours and in exchange, receive benefits, tickets, meals, showers, etc …. They work and are paid for their efforts.

Burning Man should not potentially violate Federal Law by requiring us to have proof of a covid shot in order to attend.

Quite a few of us have not caught the virus. Maybe we have natural immunity. Over 30 million people have had the virus and recovered. They have natural immunity. Including the adults in America who have received the shot, we have reached herd immunity. All of those examples are exactly the people you want attending Burning Man, spreading natural immunity to everyone they come in contact with or they have received the shot.

I am attending a convention with 35,000 – 50,000 attendees from all over the world this summer in Las Vegas. It has indoor exhibits, indoor class room education and outdoor exhibits.

There is NO shot requirement to attend this indoor/outdoor convention with 35,000 to 50,000 people in a much smaller and more confined space than Burning Man. Only temperatures taken, masking and the six feet distancing.

There is NO shot requirement to attend.

The government should not require stricter rules for attending Burning Man than the rules for this convention.

The Org. should not require stricter rules to attend Burning Man.

The Org. should NOT require a shot to attend Burning Man.
