Strong winds put the Burn on hold for awhile last night, but The Man finally went up in flames around 11 p.m. The harsh conditions earlier in the evening forced the cancellation of the fire conclave beforehand. By the time the big guy burned, though, the dust storms had cleared and the night had turned beautiful.
Lots more pics and a wrapup post in a day or two.
The Man burns in 364 days.
John Curley (that's me) has been Burning since the relatively late date of 2004, and in 2008 I spent the better part of a month on the playa, documenting the building and burning of Black Rock City in words and pictures. I loved it, and I've been doing it ever since.
I was a newspaper person in a previous life, and I spent many years at the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time I left, in 2007, I was the deputy managing editor in charge of Page One and the news sections of the paper. Since then, I've turned a passion for photography into a second career. I shoot for editorial, commercial and private clients. I've also taught a little bit, including two years at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and a year at San Francisco State University.
I live on the San Mateo coast, just south of San Francisco in California.
By “fire conclave” do you mean the performers that carry the fire to the Man’s structure and all the performers that dance around the circle before the burn?
Glad the night was beautiful overall and much rejoicing happened. 364 days to get my butt in gear.

The burn made my night and completed my week!!! Thankfully the wind died down to make this happen, which I knew it would! Thanks to everyone who supported this and put time and energy into the burn… we all owe you!

It’s funny, everyone we talked too on the day of the burn, during the storm, had no doubts that it would conveniently die down in time for the burn. Which of course, is exactly what happened, as if there’s no way a little thing like Nature would delay or cancel the burn.
A fantastic burn to end a fantastic week. Can’t wait for the next one.
