The white procession

White was the theme Wednesday night and Thursday morning in Black Rock City.

The Opulent Temple dance camp had a big blowout on Wednesday night, a gathering that’s called White Night.

Then, the next morning, everyone who’s still up after a night of dancing, plus other folks who want to see the sun rise in the far reaches of the playa, heads out to the Temple for the White Procession.

Here are a some photos from the morning after and the night before.

About the author: John Curley

John Curley (that's me) has been Burning since the relatively late date of 2004, and in 2008 I spent the better part of a month on the playa, documenting the building and burning of Black Rock City in words and pictures. I loved it, and I've been doing it ever since. I was a newspaper person in a previous life, and I spent many years at the San Francisco Chronicle. At the time I left, in 2007, I was the deputy managing editor in charge of Page One and the news sections of the paper. Since then, I've turned a passion for photography into a second career. I shoot for editorial, commercial and private clients. I've also taught a little bit, including two years at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and a year at San Francisco State University. I live on the San Mateo coast, just south of San Francisco in California.

  • That’s it, I’m going next year.

Been to the last six in a row, waved off this one to observe the current hard times. I now feel that was a mistake.

I’m right there with you, studebaker. Went from ’99 straight through till ’07. Took a break last year and purposefully kept myself occupied with lots of other things during Burn Week, but this time I’m sitting this one out in my apartment, thinking what the hell am I doing HERE!? 2010 or bust, baby!

I have only been three times… the last three years but in 2007 my first year I met the love of my life and we have never looked back. We will most likely never miss a burn. The first year will always stand out for me, but this year was absolutely spot on.. simply do not see how it could have been any better. Off topic, I brought a small remote control plane with me that has a small HD video camera on it. I had the chance to do several flights a round the playa. Here is a long one from out by the man. Skip to 12:30 for smoother footage… be sure to turn down/or off the volume as the whine of the motor is obscene. See you all next year, hope you enjoy the flight:) The Flyboy
